KARYA GÖKOVA KONAKLARI
Turkey, Muğla, Ula, Gökova
Karya Gökova Mansions were brought to life through a contemporary architectural interpretation of the traditional Akyaka houses, known for their “large windows, wooden roofs, verandas, and wooden balconies,” while fully meeting the needs of modern living. Traditional architectural features naturally evolve over centuries in response to geography, local culture, and lifestyle. The architectural design and implementation process of Karya Gökova Mansions aimed to harmonize this centuries-old heritage with the aesthetic and functional habits of modern urban life. Its architecture, incorporating ecological design elements, terraced landscaping with different functions, and units offering surprising perspectives within nature, provides alternatives capable of meeting various needs. We aimed to reduce the building’s energy consumption and minimize its negative impact on the environment. At the same time, we believed that an ecological structure should also reflect the social and cultural character of its region. The materials we selected were recyclable and chosen to cause minimal harm to nature while generating the least possible waste.
Insulation was handled with the utmost sensitivity and attention to detail. From the foundation to the roof, we used state-of-the-art insulation materials that have proven their success internationally. For the roofs, we used silicone-coated natural roof tiles that do not retain water, while beneath the tiles we applied Boardex roof covering panels resistant to air and moisture, together with additional insulation materials. By analyzing land, water, energy, financial efficiency, and indoor air quality, we combined a sustainable lifestyle approach with a modern concept in our structures. In our landscaping areas, we preferred local plants requiring minimal water and maintenance. By choosing high thermal insulation glass systems, we created living spaces with sound insulation and minimal heat loss. The building form and orientation were designed to maximize the benefits of sunlight.
